    Splendid Ruins: Hotels Built on History (The New York Times)5/09/2010

    The Auberge Saint-Antoine is a 95-room luxury hotel close to the St. Lawrence River in the bustling heart of Old Quebec. It was here, in a site dominated by abandoned warehouses and a parking lot, that the Price family first broke ground to build a hotel in 1992.  Those digging began to find artifacts just a few inches beneath the surface,  said Evan Price,  a co-owner.  “It turned out to be one of the richest archaeological spots in the city,” he said.

    The Tailor

    Mr. Gaudiose Montreuil, a tailor living at 12 rue Saint-Antoine in the late 19th century, often used buttons made of bone, some of which were produced in Québec City. Button makers sliced bone into thin layers and cut out discs that were then pierced with holes, decorated, and polished.
