The Auberge’s Sustainable Development

Learn about our GREEN EFFORTS

We believe that true luxury has no reason to exist if it is produced at the expense of nature and mankind, therefore we make the effort to practice our business in the best possible environmentally friendly manner.

The Auberge and its family have always pursued a certain vision for sustainability. However, there is always a possibility to push this quest for a ‘Zero Impact’ further through our activities. We continuously research to improve our sustainable practices.

OUR FARM

  • We produce our own vegetables, salads, and herbs for restaurant Chez Muffy from April to December. With more than 0.74 acres of land, our vegetable garden grows each year.
  • A garden culture based on the seed calendar, crop rotation, companionship, compost, non-use of chemical fertilizer, and pesticides.
  • We have our own beehives to help fruits and vegetables grow from pollination.

IN OUR KITCHENS & RESTAURANT

  • We provision ourselves with local produce in a radius of 50 km most possible.
  • Catches are sourced in the respect of marine resources.
  • Excess food is used in the staff's menus.
  • Breakfast jams and spreads are house-made using local farm product, while the organic maple syrup comes from a family cooperative on Orleans Island
  • We reduce a certain amount of plastic by using only paper or other organic straws at our bar and restaurants.
  • All Nespresso capsules are collected and returned for up-cycling into pens. Learn more about this program
  • The microfiltered water offered in the restaurant, the rooms for events and the GYM is produced on-site and relieves the environment of 60 000 plastic bottles and over 60 truck deliveries per year.
  • We are pleased to be certified Aliments du Québec au menu, which recognizes restaurants and institutions that value Quebec products in their menu, and Smarter Seafood, which honours restaurants that use sustainable products from the St. Lawrence.

IN OUR ROOMS

  • The individual plastic containers of toiletries have been replaced by refillable ones, using a locally produced natural toiletry line called Oneka. A family-run agriculture business located in the eastern townships of Quebec. This allows us to avoid throwing away several hundred kilos of plastic per year.
  • All started guest soap is collected and up-cycled in collaboration with Clean the World a health organization committed to improving the quality of life for vulnerable communities around the world.
  • Bed Linen is changed every 2nd day, for water-saving purposes, while guests have the choice to opt-in or out of these efforts.
  • We only use green-labeled and biodegradable cleaning products on the property.
  • Old sheets are "recycled" and used as protections for maintenance use. Used towels are recycled into rags for the household.

OTHER INITIATIVES

  • All procedure face masks are collected and recycled in collaboration with Terra Cycle.
  • Throughout the Auberge, we practice selective sorting to facilitate recycling.
  • An in-house workshop for maintenance, electricity and painting, work throughout the year to extend the life of objects.
  • We continuously work on reducing energy by pausing heating, refrigerating, ventilation and light systems for rooms & services out of order for long time periods. Energy-efficient light bulbs are introduced continuously.
  • We propose on property electric charging stations for vehicles.
  • A paperless guest check-in as well as check-out is favorised.
  • We collaborate with Quebec hospitality institutions to encourage apprenticeship and to support local employment.
  • Anthroposophical involvements in our community to preserve the quality of mankind and local history as a museum hotel are part of our vocation. .
  • Finally, we make sure to respect "senior" employment as well as gender inequality and encourage the maintenance of employment for those who experienced accidents/difficulties

On World Earth day 2021, Auberge employees will participate in a river shore clean-up and joning efforts of The Great Canadian Shorelien Clean-UP.

There is still a lot more to accomplish and we are far from perfect. However, we truly believe in this approach, and we are doing as we say.
We do share this vision of a cleaner and more respectful world with our fellow Relais & Châteaux hotels with  the Manifesto presented to UNESCO in 2014.
